Since 1935, Cooke’s Brake Service’s business model remains the same: Do what's best for the customer, communicate clearly, never sell unneeded parts or service, and deliver when promised. Founder Harold Cooke taught us that if we simply do these things faithfully, we will always have plenty of work. With a fourth generation learning the trade at Cooke’s, we look forward to another 80 years of doing what’s right for our customers.

Our most loyal customers have come to us after being jaded by their experiences with the auto repair industry: More than once, they went in for one repair and came out with an estimate for 2 or 3 more repairs that they didn’t really need. Your time is important. We promise to get your car back to you ASAP. That’s why we offer same-day turnaround whenever possible. Often we can provide service on short notice, time permitting: just give us a call and we will try to work you in!

We offer a minimum 1-year / 12,000 mile warranty on all parts and labor we provide--100%! With our attention to detail, we’re pretty sure you won’t need to use it though. We only use quality parts--and we offer you money-saving options. If a factory part is too expensive, we can provide a comparable quality, industry standard replacement. We will work with you--and for you--until you are satisfied.

We are a family owned and operated business with 3 generations currently working: A Grandfather, two sons, and their children. Cooke’s has always supported local schools and donates to numerous charitable organizations in Southeast Portland. Our owners and operators include a Volunteer Firefighter and a retired Veteran with 25 years of service.
Bill Tracy
Together with his two sons, Dan and Pat, Bill became a co-owner of Cooke’s Brake Service in 1982. He has 37 years of experience as an auto mechanic and an engineering background. Bill is father and grandfather to (nearly) everyone who works at Cooke’s...
Father & Grandfather
Bill has been a family man his whole life and has 4 children, 8 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. His hobby is sitting in the shop, drinking coffee, and chatting it up with customers.

Dan Tracy
Together with his Dad and Brother, Dan became co-owner of Cooke’s Brake Service in 1982. He has 37 years of experience as an auto mechanic and is ASE Certified. Dan is a jolly fellow who makes you feel like an old friend with his first handshake. First and foremost a family man, Dan is also very active in his community...
Volunteer Firefighter
Dan has been a volunteer firefighter since 1987 in Gladstone and recently co-founded the nonprofit organization
Firefighters Against Distracted Driving. They are developing an engaging and evidence-based campaign designed to help teens, parents, and teachers tackle the issue of reckless and distracted driving. Check them out and like them on Facebook!
Pat Tracy
Together with his Dad and Brother, Pat became co-owner of Cooke’s Brake Service in 1982. He has 37 years of experience as an auto mechanic. Now a retired veteran, Pat proudly served his country for 25 years in the Air Force. He is a family man and a very humble person...

Pat has been married for over 30 years and working together in the shop with his son Ryan for the past 10. He has one granddaughter, and another grandchild on the way. Pat brings the good-natured sarcasm that every family auto shop requires.
Ryan Tracy
The baby of the Cooke’s crew--and the promise for our future--Ryan has worked here for over 10 years. He and his wife have a daughter and are expecting their second child...

In his free time Ryan enjoys spending time with his family and learning about world history. He is an avid skier.
Thanh "Tom" Phan
Born and raised in Vietnam, Thanh fled the Viet Cong after the war in the late 70s on a boat with 12 people--not all of who survived the voyage. He is a master technician with 40 years of experience - including as a Subaru factory tech - who we have on call to help with very specialized problems...
Vietnam Survivor & Father
Always a family man, Thanh is the proud father of 2 sons: one is an engineer in Florida, and the other is about to get his second college degree in computer science. His passion is working on cars--both in his free time and professional life.
